Title  Computer delivered brief intervention for alcohol problems in general practice : a randomised clinical trial
Description  Project aims:
1. To assess the feasibility of computerised screening for problem drinking in general practitioner (GP) settings;
2. To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of GP versus computer based brief intervention for problem drinking in metropolitan and rural Australian settings;
3. To expore the feasibility of a web-based version of computer delivered brief intervention for problem drinking

Methodology  The study is a randomised clinical trial (RCT) with GP surgeries as the unit of randomisation. Patients will be screened in GP waiting rooms by hand-held computer. Of those identified as problem drinkers, half will receive a computer based brief intervention. Patients will be asked questions about their satisfaction with the screening programme and the extent to which they use the internet. The study began in the second half of 2001 and is due for completion in July, 2005.
